Monash Masterclass San Francisco: Entrepreneurship - Can it really be taught?

We would like to invite you to a special Monash Business School Alumni Masterclass and Panel Discussion. This event will be hosted by Professor Richard Hall, Deputy Dean, Leadership and Executive Education, and will be facilitated by Professor David Gilbert, Director of Entrepreneurship, Monash Business School, Monash University.

It is happening in San Francisco on Wednesday, 17 July 2019 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.

There has for some time been debate regarding entrepreneurship as a discipline that can be ‘taught’. Irrespective of whether you sit on one side of the fence or the other, the future of work requires individuals and teams who possess both mindsets and capabilities that are entrepreneurial. Research indicates that individuals will have something in the order of 4-7 careers in their lifetime. An entrepreneurial mindset combined with capabilities that enable individuals (and teams) to be comfortable with ambiguity and to navigate uncertainty, will help facilitate the agility and adaptability required in such dynamic environments.

So what is the current state of play and what are the potential future directions concerning entrepreneurship education? Professor David Gilbert, Director of Entrepreneurship will examine best practice and critical pathways for entrepreneurship education. From a contemporary and practice-based perspective, this Masterclass will discuss the ‘what’ and ‘how’ in developing the required entrepreneurial mindsets and capabilities necessary to fast track new opportunities, better ways of living and alternate ways of doing business. You will also hear perspectives from some distinguished alumni from the Bay Area.

About the presenter:

David Gilbert is Professor and Director of Entrepreneurship at Monash Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Business with 1st Class Honours and a PhD on ‘Firm Innovativeness in Japanese SMEs’. David’s research on entrepreneurial capability, innovation and commercialisation, technology and digital transformation as well as business incubation has been published in top-tier international journals. He is also the co-author of Reinventing Innovation: Designing the Dual Organization’ (Palgrave & Macmillan – New York).

Before joining academia, David enjoyed a diverse and distinguished career in international business holding positions at the highest levels including CEO, President and Partner in both corporate and private enterprises in various countries including Japan, USA, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia as well as Hong Kong. He has extensive experience in start-ups, having founded or invested in over a dozen businesses. He is highly engaged with the start-up community in Melbourne and beyond and believes strongly in the power and efficacy of entrepreneurial mindsets, in delivering outcomes that matter
